Sustainable 60 Award Judges

To ensure that the design of the entry process was robust, highly respected and experienced individuals from within the business community gave their input. Our thanks to the stakeholders involved in that process.

Meet the judges - our thanks go to the following judges for their commitment and participation in the Sustainable 60 Awards.

Rod Oram

Rod Oram has more than 30 years’ experience as an international financial journalist. He has worked for various publications in Europe and North America, including the Financial Times of London. Rod and his family emigrated from the UK to New Zealand in 1997.
He is currently a columnist for the Sunday Star-Times and Good Magazine; a regular broadcaster on radio and television; and a frequent public speaker. Rod is an adjunct professor in the Business School at Unitec. And Penguin published in 2007 his book on the New Zealand economy, Reinventing Paradise.
Rod was recently named as the Landcorp Agricultural Communicator of the Year, 2009.

Rick Christie, Chairman, Ebos Group

Mr Christie is a professional Director and company Chairman with appointments in both the private and public sectors. He has had considerable experience as a Chief Executive with extensive involvement in the export sector, including Tradenz (The New Zealand Trade Development Board) where he was Chief Executive from 1990 to 1996.

He is currently Chairman of Ebos Group Ltd., and Chairman of Argenta Ltd. He is a Director of Tourism Holdings Ltd., Wakefield Health Ltd., and the NZ Pork Industry Board. Until recently he was Chairman of AgResearch Ltd., Chairman of the Growth and Innovation advisory Board., Deputy Chairman of the Foundation for Research Science & Technology and Chairman of the Victoria University Foundation Board of Trustees.


Alex Cutler
Alex Cutler, CEO, New Zealand Green Building Council

Alex Cutler joined the New Zealand Green Building Council in May 2010 as CEO. Her previous role was Associate Director, responsible for building and leading the sustainability practice, adding to the already successfully established climate change practice, at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) New Zealand. This entailed establishing PwC’s reputation in the field, developing a suite of services to offer clients and leading key pieces of client work. A notable achievement was the establishment of PwC’s role in the launch of the Sustainable 60 Series (S60), a partnership programme with Fairfax Media Limited. The S60 is designed to share and reward excellence in sustainable business practice in New Zealand.

For the last 12 years she has worked in consultancy, for PricewaterhouseCoopers both in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and also SustainAbility Limited, the well-known strategy consultancy and think tank. Alex specialised in developing strategy for sustainability at a number of large multinational companies in a wide variety of different sectors, including the building industry, the wines and spirits industry, the finance sector, oil and gas and the automotive sector. She also completed consulting work in areas such as procurement, climate change, clean technology and community for the corporate sector, local government and the national economic development agency.

Previous to her role in consulting, Alex worked for Social Venture Network Europe, a membership organisation of socially and environmentally responsible businesses, where, as part of the Management team, she was responsible for the financial management of the organisation, developing new projects to benefit members and successfully ran the annual European conference.

Alex’s career started working for Anita Roddick of The Body Shop, helping to set up and establish the New Academy of Business, an educational organisation founded to encourage the inclusion of social and environmental values in mainstream business thinking.

Alex has a degree in Environmental Sciences and a Masters in Environmental Management.

Wayne Norrie, Executive Director and Co Founder, Revera

Wayne has over 30 years IT industry experience on top of a Bachelor of Science degree with a Computer Science major.

This experience ranges from technical and software development roles for 10 years, to sales and management responsibilities for over 10 years. This covers a variety of industries across a range of geographies.

Working off shore for 8 years across a diverse mixture of companies (e.g. Databank, General Electric, Accenture, and Prudential) has provided some unique perspectives on forming and managing successful teams.

This culminated in a Management Buy Out (MBO) of Hitachi Data Systems NZ along with business partner Roger Cockayne.

Wayne is Chairman of the Hi Tech Association (HTA), Chairman of Team BLM (making the Bruce McLaren movie), Chairman of Fronde, Chairman of Maven , a Director of Revera, and a Director of ASPEQ Ltd. He is also chair of NZTE Beachheads Program, and previously served on the Hi Growth Board.

He is member of DTEP (Digital Technolgoies Expert Panel) for Ministry of Education which is spearheading resolving ICT in secondary schools. He is a member of the WCNZ (World Class New Zealander) network within KEA, a member of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management.


Lester Oakes, CEO, Career Services

Lester is CEO of Career Services, a Crown entity that provides independent careers information, advice and guidance to New Zealanders. Career Services has a nationwide network of offices and employs nearly 200 staff. Lester has been Chief Executive since July 1998 and has overseen a significant expansion of the service during his tenure, along with an increasing acceptance by government of its public good role.

Lester is driven by the belief that the careers industry is a credible contributor to economic and social development. Much of Career Services expansion has been as a direct result of a long term approach to working alongside key government departments to demonstrate the links between career information and practice and the wider educational, employment, economic and social goals they are seeking to achieve.

Anne-Maree O’Connor, Head of Responsible Investment, New Zealand Superannuation Fund

Anne-Maree O’Connor is the Head of Responsible Investment for the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation (Guardians) and plays a key role in the development and implementation of the Guardians responsible investment and corporate governance policies.

Prior to joining the Fund, Anne-Maree was the Managing Director of CoreRatings, a leading European rating agency for independent investment analyses of corporate responsibility and governance risks. She moved back to New Zealand after 20 years in Europe. Anne-Maree held various positions in the field of corporate responsibility and responsible investment including Associate Director, SRI at Morley Fund Management, Head of SRI Research at Henderson Global Investors and Head of Corporate Responsibility Ratings at Det Norske Veritas.

She holds an MSc from the University College of Wales (UK), a BSc from Massey University (NZ) and the Investment Management Certificate (UK).
